Yahoo Shuts Sex Chat Rooms

June 23rd 2005 | General

Yahoo has closed down some of its chat rooms following an exposé by a local Houston, Texas television station which uncovered chats called “9-17 Year Olds Wantin’ Sex” and “Girls 13 and Under for Older Guys.”

Several companies withdrew their advertising from Yahoo and, as of Friday, users were unable to create their own chat rooms. A message read that Yahoo was making “improvements to this service to enhance the user experience…”

Yahoo! has faced criticism for their lack of chat-room moderation before, having been presented with a petition last year. However, nothing was done before they lost advertising revenue. They also face US$10 million in fines for hosting the chats.
