Today we’re talking a look at XFX’s GeForce 6800Ultra. XFX is one of NVIDIA’s premier board partners. By this, we mean that they are allowed to hand pick the GPU’s in order for them to be capable of reaching higher clock speeds than what the majority of NVIDIA’s other board partners are capable of. This particular board is clocked at 450MHz core and 1100MHz on the memory, as opposed to the reference 6800U speed of 400/1100.
…Without doubt, the XFX GeForce 6800Ultra is a sterling package with very little room for improvement. With the exception of Far Cry, it delivers image quality and performance that is about as good as it gets. This has to be one of the fastest graphics boards available on the planet at the moment, and we have no hesitation in recommending this video card.
Our one worry is that of noise - the fan on this video card is rather noisy on our test bed, certainly much noisier than ATI’s Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition. This may be down to the bios though, as we briefly tested another board-partners’ GeForce 6800Ultra implementation, which did not suffer from the same noise levels when inside Windows with smart fan turned on. When enclosed inside a case, the noise will not be quite so apparent, but we would recommend considering other cooling options if you want to completely nullify the proud hum that this card emits.
XFX GeForce 6800Ultra - One of the fastest, available, graphics cards on the planet.
