x-bitlabs has the skinny on VIA’s KT600 chipset:
We received a number of letters from some of our readers, who expressed their displeasure with VIA announcing the KT400A after we had told you that the KT400 had been the last and final stop for VIA Socket A chipsets. Now I am probably going to receive another bunch of letters probably of the same kind about the KT400A, as VIA intends to roll-out KT600 chipset in the second quarter. Please be patient, as we report you what VIA Technologies reports us, but while VIA Technologies does not sometimes know the market situation for the next couple of quarters, such data may be inaccurate. Well, now we have to admit that even KT400A is not the last chipset from VIA for the desktop Socket A market and we also cannot tell you for sure if VIA KT600 is.
VIA KT600 is nothing more than the KT400A with 400MHz EV-6 FSB support. It still provides up to 4GB of PC2100, PC2700 or PC3200 (DDR400) DDR SDRAM memory, AGP 8x and 8x V-Link architecture to connect North and South Bridges. The newcomer will be accompanied by VT8237 I/O controller that supports 8 USB 2.0 ports and 2 Serial ATA-150 ports. On the one hand, 400MHz FSB is not a peculiarity that should urge you to get one of those VIA KT600 mainboards to come in the second quarter, but on the other hand 400MHz bus is a feature that should urge you to avoid VIA KT400A now. Make your choice.
