VIA, SiS May Lose Pricing Edge to NVIDIA MCP61S

August 7th 2006 | CPUs & Chipsets

Taiwan-based chipset suppliers Silicon Integrated System (SiS) and VIA Technologies will gradually lose their pricing edge in the entry-level chipset market as the Nvidia MCP61S integrated graphics processor (IGP) chipset is expected to win wider adoption with motherboard makers by providing cheaper cost with better performance, sources indicated. The all-in-one IGP chipset, which integrates both northbridge and southbridge capabilities, will target US$60-80 motherboards for the value PC segment, according to the sources.

Nvidia will reportedly introduce its nForce 6100 IGP chipset line, which will provide all-in-one northbridge and southbridge solutions, starting with the 405 chipset (codenamed MCP61S) at the end of August. Following the nForce 6100-405, Nvidia will launch two more chipsets under the nForce 6100 IGP line—the 400 (codenamed MCP61V) and the 430 (codenamed MCP61P) by the first quarter of 2007, sources familiar with the vendor’s chipset roadmap indicated. The nForce 6100-400 will target the entry-level segment, whereas the nForce 6100-430 will be set for the mainstream desktop application, according to the sources.
