It can’t be that a PC needs more power than an air conditioner or two fridges combined! Something’s just going wrong, despite the voltages dropping, semiconducter processes shrinking and more efficient designs - a kilowatt desktop PC simply sounds too scary. Got to prove ‘em wrong…
So, I got along to assemble a test system with a choice of components: Kentsfield 2.66 GHz, ECS PN2 SLI2+ Extreme board with Nforce 680i chipset, two Sparkle 8800GTX 768 MB cards in SLI tie up, 2 GB of Corsair XMS6400CL3 tried and trusty twin DIMM set, running well at 1066 speed too, and Evercool’s just arrived Nighthawk water cooler - the size of two DVD drives in a unique combo config.
And, oh yes, will my old MGE Magnum XG 500W power supply, used for all the reference testing over the past 6 months, be able to cope with all this..?
