Two Year Water Cooling Project: Flex, Hose & Duct Tape - and a Saw Wrist

April 11th 2005 | Cooling

Forum member John Simmons took two years to complete his water cooling project, a true labour-of-love with real blood, sweat and tears… “I managed to sever the tendons for three of the four fingers on that hand, and to be quite honest, I kinda lost interest in this project until now.”

Well, who wouldn’t?

John eventually returned to the project and paired up an MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum nForce3 motherboard with an AMD64 3500 Winchester CPU for the final system. Choosing watercooling components wasn’t as straightforward:

I don’t think I need to tell you that there are DOZENS of water cooling components (and indeed, complete systems) from which to choose. In fact, a mere mortal is likely to become quite overwhelmed with the choices available. Ask any five people what the best system is, and you’ll get five different answers, thus muddying the waters with opinions, conjecture, facts, baseless deductions, half-truths, and outright falsehoods.

In the end, all you can rely on is your wits, your power of silent yet studious observation, and an uncanny amount of good luck in picking out just the right stuff. Finally, always remember that “cool” costs money - how cold do you want to get?

John’s trials and tribulations can be found here, a good read and a ‘down-to-earth’ guide for those thinking of entering the world (and expense) of building a water cooled system.
