Sony Offers Firmware Upgrade for Bravia and Grand Wega TVs

February 15th 2006 | General

If you recently purchased a Sony LCD (liquid crystal display) or rear-projection television, you may want to check the model number. A problem in the firmware for these televisions means they will stop operating normally after 1,200 hours of use, according to the company.

The firmware problem causes the televisions to either not turn on or off after 1,200 hours of operation, Sony says. Customers who purchased LCD or rear-projection televisions in Asia or North America before November 2005 are potentially affected by the problem, the company says. The flaw is not present in television models that were sold in Europe.

PC World Magazine - Firmware flaw causes problems in Sony TVs

We have recently learned that a limited number of Bravia (Flat Screen) and Grand Wega (Rear Projection LCD) televisions manufactured through November 2005 temporarily may not, after several months (depending upon usage), turn on or off due to a software issue. This problem is easily resolved with a simple software update provided by Sony at no charge.

Not all Bravia or Grand Wega televisions are affected. No safety issues exist with your TV. If you have already experienced this software issue, the television can be temporarily reset by disconnecting the AC Power Cord from the wall outlet, wait at least 30 seconds and then reconnect the AC power cord to the wall outlet. After this reset procedure, the television should work properly until another several months of use has accumulated.
