A new type of display panel which is extremely thin and is flexible enough to be rolled up like a piece of paper has been developed by a research team from Sony and the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, according to business daily the Nikkei.
Forbes – Sony aims to commercialize products based on the new display technology, which can be applied to televisions and mobile phones, around 2010, the business daily said. The prototype display is 6.3cm square and 0.35mm thick. Its picture resolution [79 dots per inch (dpi)] is higher than the current 50 dpi of bendable displays and even higher than the 72 dpi of a typical liquid crystal display (LCD) panel, the report said. The panel is based on LCD elements and uses transistors made from an organic material that is printed onto a plastic substrate.
