Blu-ray is one small step closer to becoming mainstream, thanks to the publicity generated by Sony’s PlayStation 3. The next step is to get the enthusiasts onboard and Sony intends to do that with its new BWU-100A Blu-ray writer. Here’s HardwareZone’s with the drive:
It is probably fair to say that many enthusiasts are not really buying into the whole Blu-ray/HD DVD formats at this moment, particularly for PC-based writers like the Sony BWU-100A. The fact that companies like Lite-On and Sony themselves are still releasing new 18x and 20x DVD writers just this year points to the enduring appeal of the DVD format. The falling price of hard drive storage has also largely nullified the cost advantage of DVD media and with the high entry prices of next generation formats like Blu-ray and HD DVD, it may appear to be more economical to change hard drives regularly rather than backup data on 25 or 50GB media. Only those who require heavy large capacity archival and in certain industries like CGI animation or film, may require Blu-ray now.
