Plextor DVD RW CD RW ± 708UF Review

February 26th 2004 | Storage

HardwareHell has reviewed the Plextor DVD RW CD RW ± 708UF, an external CD/DVD combo burner with USB2 and FireWire connections. Great looks and performance - hefty price tag though ($300+).

As I have stated in my other Plextor reviews, Plextor are known for their quality hardware. The performance of their drives is second to none. Plextor drives are what you buy when you want something to last you for years. I had an 8x/20x SCSI Plextor CD burner, which was my first, for at least 5 years before replacing it. The Plextor 708UF is the same as the Plextor 708A, which I had the pleasure of reviewing. The main difference here is that this drive – the 708UF - is external. The drive offers two methods of connection; either firewire or USB 2.0.

..Having spent the past few days tinkering with this drive and showing it off to friends for their opinion I have to say I was quite happy. Despite the drive being quite large, it doesn’t bother me since I don’t have a laptop. If I had one, this would prove to be a bit troublesome since it is bulky and a bit heavy. The look of the drive would pretty much makeup for its size and weight as it would probably turn heads wherever you are at. The drive performed quite well as did the 708A. The only major disappointment, aside from the lack of included media, was the price. The drive is fairly expensive in comparison to the competition out there. Just note, however, that when you buy Plextor you are buying the best, and it is worth every penny.
