NVIDIA to Launch Three MCP 78-based Chipsets in November

July 23rd 2007 | CPUs & Chipsets

Nvidia schedules to launch three MCP 78-based chipsets, MCP 78U, S and D in November of this year. The MCP 78U and S are both IGP (integrated graphics processor) chipsets, while the MCP 78D does not support integrated graphics, according to sources from motherboard makers.

The MCP 78U and S chipsets will support DirectX 10 and PureVideo GEN2 technology. The PureVideo GEN2 will feature a BSP decoding engine and HDCP. Additionally, Nvidia’s Hybrid SLI technology will also be supported, noted the sources.

MCP 78U-based motherboard will be priced around US$70-80, while the MCP 78S will be around US$55-65. The MCP 78S will have lower graphics core frequencies than the MCP 78U plus the chipset will not include the BSP engine. The MCP 78D will have similar features as the MCP 78S except without integrated graphics. Pricing for this chipset has not been set.

Allegedly, A01 engineering samples are about to hit the Taiwanese mobo makers for evaluation. The November date currently being bandied about is later than previously thought, with market-watchers previously thinking that October was the likely time frame.

Whether the fabled GeForce 9800 could have had any impact on the launch date we couldn’t possibly speculate, but we will anyway, and suggest that the delay means that the 9800 will almost certainly ship in December, hot on the heels. Err, ok, probably.
