The original PS1 had a pretty basic 3D graphics chip, and only a little while later did 3Dfx release the original Voodoo. The PS2 had a better 3D engine, but while it could push the triangles, it was no match in visual splendor to the GeForce 3 that NVIDIA was poised to release mere months later. Sony knew they probably could not compete without getting help from ATI or NVIDIA, and of course the best way to compete with Microsoft is to cut their legs out from under them. I have a feeling that Sony approached NVIDIA with “an offer they couldn’t refuse”. In one fell swoop Sony took the GPU/Northbridge/Sound/Southbridge provider from Microsoft. I think this speculation may hold up well, as NVIDIA really didn’t fight very hard for the X-Box 2 contract.
