Chris Tom previews NVIDIA’s nForce3 Pro chipset:
Nvidia of course implements AMD’s HyperTransport which allows for improved bandwidth system wide. The HyperTransport link between the nForce 3 Pro and the Opteron tops out at an impressive 3.6GB/sec. HyperTransport allows the other system components like AGP and PCI to use much more additional bandwidth. Nvidia gave the example of Gigabit Ethernet on the nForce 3 Pro being capable of 256MB/sec which would be limited to 133MB/sec on a normal system by the PCI bus bandwidth limit. Essentially HyperTransport has been utilized by Nvidia to the fullest degree to provide for a high bandwidth workstation chipset. The nF3 150 which is available to motherboard manufacturers now, and the nF3 250 in the fall with more advanced features like Gigabit Ethernet. Below are the features of each version of the nForce 3 Pro.
