There will be two flavors of the 6600 series of cards - 6600 and 6600 GT. NVIDIA has redesigned the GPU, code-named NV43, for these two mainstream cards instead of working with the NV40 core. The NV43 GPU is dubbed as the "Doom III GPU". There is an obvious reason for such claim, but there is yet another reason why NVIDA feels so strongly about the 6600 line of cards. We will see why NVIDIA claims what they do further during this preview.
…Without a doubt, NVIDIA’s future looks promising should they beat ATI in the mid-end market segment. They will definitely notice an increase in their yearly revenue as majority of their consumers will probablly be mainstream users. NVIDIA may also please various system integrators who are willing to include a mid-end card in their systems. According to the information we received, NVIDIA’s 6600 will retail for $179 while the 6600 GT will retail for $199.
We have high hopes for NVIDIA’s SLI technology; it would be very exciting to see what kind of performance gains the user gets by combining two mid-end cards. While SLI technology looks promising for NVIDIA, it may take some time for it reach the mainstream market simply because of the lack of motherboards. NVIDIA also has plans to introduce the 6600 series cards in the AGP version, but they haven’t disclosed too much information regarding this. As we get more information from our contacts, we will further update you with our analysis and direct performance numbers. As it currently stands, NVIDIA has much better hold of the market with their 6800 series cards and their position will only strenghten with the 6600 product line in the near future.
