NVIDIA C51Chipset Launch Next Month - First Truly Upgradeable Onboard Graphics?

August 17th 2005 | NVIDIA

With nVidia working on bridgeless SLI, and spreading the benefits of dual graphics to lower end cards, will the C51 be the first integrated graphics solution to actually be upgradeable? Being stuck with a weak, outdated graphics core has always been the big downside for integrated graphics.

But imagine: just plug a special (perhaps DRAM-less) 6200-based graphics card into the PCI-Express x16 slot on a C51 mainboard, and have it work together in SLI mode with the 6200 core inside the chipset, providing an instant, cheap performance boost to an old motherboard. Given driver support and sufficient shared memory, why not?
