The DDW-081 is a single format burner, which burns the +R/+RW format. However, if you are a movie buff, don’t give up hope, there is a beta firmware in the making that turns this drive into a dual format burner. This will in turn make it much more attractive for the price. This review will be based off the official firmware which is the way the drive is shipped in the box. The firmware allowing for dual format capabilities is still experimental and should only be installed at your discretion. In this review will we be testing Nu-Tech’s own 4X DVD+RW disc, as well as Maxell DVD+R 4X (burned at 8X).
…All in all, the Nu DDW-081 is a decent drive considering the price. When the new firmware is released, turning his drive into a dual-format drive, the price will be even more attractive. If you are looking for a higher speed DVD burner that will not break the bank, and still give you the performance of the slightly more expensive competition, the Nu-Tech DDW-081 fits the bill.
