nForce2 (SPP) Best AMD Chipset

December 19th 2002 | nForce2

nForce2 (SPP) stole the gold for Best AMD Chipset at The INQUIRER CPU, mobo, chipset, sound awards - and took silver, behind Creative Labs’ Audigy 2, for Best Consumer Sound. As reported earlier, the nForce2 IGP won the INQ’s Best Integrated Chipset award.

ASUS’ nForce2 SPP mobo, the A7N8X Deluxe, was a strong contender for Best Motherboard - but didn’t even get a place on the podium with the plaudits going to the EPoX EP-8K9A2+ (KT400), Abit IT7 Max 2.0 (i845PE) and Chaintech 7VJL (i845P).

ASUS are unlikely to be doing a ‘Gwyneth‘ for missing out on an INQ award, but genned-up ASUS nForcers might be wondering just what could have been if the A7N8X was paired up with a SoundStorm Audio Bay

BEST AMD CHIPSET
GOLD Looks like the Nforce 2 has grabbed this gong at the last minute. The SPP, non integrated version, that drives dual channel DDR 400 deserves the gold.
SILVER The KT400 brought us some amazing boards, excellent for overclockers – you can push your Athlon to the very limit of its performance, and richly deserves the silver.
BRONZE Via gets another gong to hang round Wenchi’s neck, for its KT333 chipsets. They have all you need apart from AGP8X support. And does anyone need that yet, anyroadmap?

BEST CONSUMER SOUND
GOLD Little doubt in this award. Creative Labs remade its original Audigy and its Audigy 2 bunked up its performance by a factor of four. So far, it clearly outperforms the other sounds around. The Audigy 2 version comes with an external 5.25 bay and a remote control and supports 6.1 Surround if 5.1 is not good enough for you.
SILVER The second best solution is the Nforce 2 sound you get from Nforce 2 motherboards — it’s good enough for gaming, DVD and surround and therefore wins this gong.
