Sporting 512MB of GDDR3 memory isn’t the only thing that separates this new card from the existing ones. To say that nVidia has tweaked the clocks would be a bit of an understatement, it’s probably more accurate to say that the company has turbocharged them. The original stock timings for the 256MB 7800 GTX were 430MHz for the core and 600MHz (1,200MHz effective) for the memory. But the new 512MB card has the core screaming along at 550MHz, while the memory is clocked at a staggering 850MHz (1,700MHz effective).

Wam, bam, thank you ma’am. That seems to be nVidia’s answer to ATI’s X1800XT card that was released ten days back and was providing the 7800GTX with some tough competition. With the introduction of the 7800GTX 512 today, nVidia takes what should rightfully be theirs for this year- the performance crown.

What we like best is that nVidia is no longer doing any paper launches. Like the 7800GTX and 7800GT cards, the 7800GTX 512 will be available from today- the date that nVidia officially announced the product. This is how it should be and other companies should take note- announce a product when you’re ready to sell it.

Even at this early stage, where we’ve only managed to complete about half of our normal gameplay evaluations, we think it is fairly safe to say that this video card is the fastest video card on the planet with no exception to that fact. In newer DirectX 9.0c titles that have come out over the last few weeks and months, we have seen that the GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB is considerably faster than the Radeon X1800XT 512MB.
