Microsoft has previewed MSN Virtual Earth, its free geo-mapping service featuring aerial photographs and satellite images which will allow users to ‘layer’ multiple search results all on the same map. MSN Virtual Earth will be available this summer and the aerial pictures will be added to the service in the fall.

The service is promised to provide:
• Satellite images with 45-degree-angle views of buildings and neighborhoods
• Satellite images with street map overlays
• Ability to add local data layers, such as showing local businesses or restaurants

CNet - Gates, presenting at the "D" conference in Carlsbad, Calif., on Monday introduced MSN Virtual Earth, a map service that lets visitors zoom in on a local area and get information about restaurants, cafes, hotels, dry cleaners, and so on.

The Register - MSN’s “Virtual Earth” sounds spookily like Google Earth also due in the next few weeks. It will let users mix satellite images, maps and local search information. The company is combining its Terra Server with technology from MapPoint. Terra Server hosts satellite images of the US.

Search Engine Watch (photos) - Last week, Google announced that its Keyhole software allowing satellite views of the Earth will be renamed Google Earth. Better images will also be available to those getting satellite views via Google Maps. In addition, Google Maps has also been getting enhanced by others adding on data from other sources.
