Microsoft Releases Service Pack 1a

February 4th 2003 | Microsoft

It seems that Microsoft have released a NEW service pack for their Flashship Operating System WindowsXP.

Labeled as Service Pack 1a, it seems that the word on the streets is (thanks MD_) that this is service pack 1, without Microsoft Virtual Machine (Java machine made by MS). Recently SUN stuck it to Microsoft, took them to court and made Microsoft pull their Virtual Machine downloads because SUN being the original creator of Java, wants users to download their Java interpreter instead. Seems that we will be seeing SUNs JRE in future Microsoft Operating Systems as well. Get Microsoft’s side of the story, as well as SUN’s here.

Microsoft WindowsXP Service Pack 1, includes Microsoft Virtual Machine. While I dont know the exact details, even though SUN wouldnt let Microsoft provide seperate downloads for the Virtual Machine. SUN did allow Microsoft to package their Virtual Machine with Service Pack 1. Why exactly the Service Pack 1a without the Virtual Machine available now? Your answer is as good as mine, I dunno. Maybe SUN put some pressure on Microsoft, or maybe this was the agreement all along, for Microsoft to release a version with and without their Virtual Machine.

Anyway here’s the nitty gritty, and the links: :)
