ByteSector takes Maxtor’s 300GB DiamondMax internal hard drive for a spin:
We always crave for more storage space. A few years back 20GB’s seemed enough yet we wanted more, then 80 GB sounded good, now we have 300GBs to embrace! But is it enough still? That entirely depends on your needs. On a 20-40GB hard drive, you cannot store high quality videos, at least not a lot. If you are into video editing or 3D animation this hard drive is a true storage haven. For a video editor, capturing non-dropped frame footage off an external source requires a lot of storage space, and this hard drive provides it. You can do the math yourself; a regular DVD movie is approximately 4.7-6 GB’s. If you are into backing up your DVD collection, on a 20GB drive you can’t backup a lot now can you? With a high capacity drive like the Maxtor 300GB you can backup your entire James Bond collection with tons of space to spare.
..Great capacity and less noise that is what this drive truly offers. In terms of speed and performance; it is not Maxtor’s best though. If you only care about storage then this drive will suit you best. For those of you who are picky on performance, this hard drive is not the choice for you. We would recommend a Serial ATA drive for people who are concerned about performance and require large capacity. The Maxtor 300GB IDE drive is a decent peace of hardware with average specifications. The only outstanding features of this drive as we see it are the reduced noise/heat packaged with extremely high capacity. A fairly good package for a total of $330 USD ($430 CDN)!
