Logitech Z-640 5.1 Speaker Set Review

February 15th 2003 | Multimedia

Penstar Systems has taken a look at Logitech’s Z-640 5.1 speaker systems. Here’s a couple of quotes:

The controls are very simple to manipulate and adjust. There are several key adjustments that are missing though; there is no level adjustment for the center and surround speakers. Different rooms have different audio properties, and the ability to adjust the center and surround channels can sometimes make or break a soundfield. Luckily the subwoofer has its own adjustment knob on the back, which is a bit of a pain to get to easily. I found that the mid-range setting for the sub was far too strong, and actually had to turn it down. When dealing with other speaker systems like the Creative Labs Inspire 5700, I constantly had to increase the level on the sub as it was just far too weak. This was not a problem with the Z-640’s. The small size of the subwoofer belies the fact that it can pump out the bass, and in fact can become overpowering if its level isn’t turned down a notch..

..Logitech has a winner on their hands, and it is perhaps one of the best value 5.1 systems on the market. It totally shames even high end Creative products (but not the Cambridge products). If I had less than $100 to spend and needed a 5.1 setup, these would be my first pick.
