LEADTEK - Leadtek K7NCR18D-Pro & Western Digital hard drives

December 3rd 2002 | Hardware

Damien from HammerheadTech.net sends word of a possible problem with Leadtek’s popular nForce2 motherboard, the K7NCR18D-Pro, and some Western Digital hard drives:

‘The motherboard won’t even recognize WD drives when they are plugged into an external PCI IDE controller…

…HardOCP, AnandTech, and 3 other places that did LeadTek reviews… *none* of them used WD drives in the testing. IBM and Maxtor were used, but not WD. So, I asked ‘em to test out with WD drives…

Damien also contacted the Leadtek crew in California who say they’ll be asking the Taiwan HQ to test the board with the WD300B and other drives mentioned in this thread to see what happens.

Stay tuned…UPDATE
dilmonen says: “the problem isn’t so much a LeadTek issue as a Western Digital issue. AND the problem is more than just the LeadTek boards. So, if someone doesn’t have a drive with the correct wires “cut” or “open” then it won’t work until the wire is modified.

Leadtek are working on a BIOS solution to the problem - workaround solution: IDE wire cut is in the forum.
