Intel 3.46EE & 925XE Chipset Reviews

November 1st 2004 | CPUs & Chipsets

Today’s announcement from Intel of their new 3.46EE processor actually brings about a couple new pieces of technology for PC enthusiasts. First, the Intel 3.46EE uses a new 1066 MHz front-side bus (266 MHz x 4) that increases memory speed on the DDR2 platform. Along with it, Intel has released the Intel 925XE chipset that is needed for official support for the 1066 MHz FSB. The real story is in how the new FSB improves performance for this Intel processor over the previous models as well as the AMD competition.

* More than once we noted that the Athlon 64 3500+ processor platform was out running the Intel 3.46EE processor. Not good news since the 3.46EE is going to cost you $999 while the Athlon 64 3500+ can be found for about $290 shipped. *

…Unless you have very specific high-performance needs that a HyperThreaded processor with a large L3 cache is perfect for, it’s hard to recommend the new 3.46EE processor to any enthusiasts or gamers. Look elsewhere for a lower cost system with similar performance, Intel or AMD, and have fun tweaking and overclocking.
