Gigabyte K8NXP-SLI nForce4 SLI Motherboard Review

January 3rd 2005 | nForce4

One thing we like about Gigabyte is that they usually send out review samples when a mass production model is right around the corner and today we’re taking a look at their K8NXP-SLI motherboard which means that nVidia’s nForce4 chipset based motherboards are coming very soon to a retailer near you. We have the top-of-the-range SLI version with us today that basically allows you to hook up two high-end Video cards in an SLI mode and, theoretically, double the performance of your video subsystem. Lets find out how well theory translates into real life.

…SLI is a new technology and we did face some incompatibilities and stability issues- maybe not because of Gigabyte but just the technology in general that needs to mature. For this particular reason, we are currently not recommending any SLI board at the moment, especially considering that some manufacturers have found a way to use the cheaper non-SLI version of the chipset and yet offer SLI capabilities.

With that said, Gigabyte does a good job with the K8NXP-SLI in every aspect. The board is feature rich providing almost everything you could want out of the box. It overclocked reasonably well and general performance was as good as any high performing Atholon64 board. With time, SLI will mature and if you don’t mind giving the technology a shot, or want to have the option of adding a second card later on when the platform is stable enough, then by all means, put the K8NXP-SLI on your short list.
