Microsoft’s Xbox 2, code-named "Xenon", will debut on a half-hour MTV special hosted by Lord of the Rings star, Elijah Woods. The show, title "MTV Presents: The Next Generation Xbox Revealed", will be broadcast globally on May 12.
"It doesn’t make sense to unveil the product behind a closed door, at a trade-only event. We wanted to talk directly to the consumer first," says Peter Moore, corporate vice president of worldwide marketing and publishing for Microsoft Xbox. “We are ecstatic about our alliance with MTV and unveiling a video game platform in a way that has never been done.”
BrandWeek reports the MTV special, hosted by actor Elijah Wood on May 12, will feature a performance by rock band the Killers. Athletes and celebs will show off the console’s new features. MTV will air teaser spots prior to the event and screening parties will be held in countries in which MTV airs.
Ourcolony.net provides further insight. The viral Xbox 2 site, currently counting down the minutes to the MTV event, states: "Colony isn’t about alternate reality gaming, it is reality. It’s about the reality of your world, your friends, your life. Colony isn’t political, it’s global."
CNet News says Microsoft had been expected to save the unveiling of the next Xbox for the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) trade show next month. But the TV event gives the company a head start of a few days and should ensure that Microsoft’s news won’t be lost among announcements regarding competing consoles, including the expected unveiling of Sony’s PlayStation 3.
MTV recently unveiled MTV Overdrive, with plans for a dedicated video game channel.
