|
|
|
Hey Guys, I have been working on an issue for a friend of my dads and this is what I have came up with. I will explain the whole thing first.
This guy is using a Cellular network based wireless card for his notebook so he has Internet access when he is in the field. Now the internet portion of the card works exactly as it should, connects fast and it provides plenty of speed. The issue is the mail server that the ISP provides - the outgoing one to be more specific. Basically when this guy is in his home province the outgoing server works great. When he goes out of Province or out of the country the outgoing server is not reachable as the packets did not originate within the province itself. So I am working on a workaround and there are two solutions, here is what I have came up with:
1)Start an internal mail server on the computer itself, since its Outgoing all it has to do is send the mail and forward it onto the DNS system and away it goes. I am unsure if this is feasible if there are programs out there that will acomplish this on a Windows setting I am extremely interested.
2)Now the second option that I have thought up is using a public outgoing mail server. In saying that I have no idea to find one.
If anyone is able to help me get either solution working or can offer up a new one that would be outstanding! I have been working 12-14 hour days as of late and having to sit in front of another networking problem to solve it will make me scream!
Thanks again |

Greetings!
So, if your fathers friend used another mail service? Or changed ISP?

Join the club. Am quite amazed by the amount of unappreciated free time I had. |

Basically when he is at home his ISP email address works fine. When he goes out of the country he is unable to reach his ISP's outgoing mail server which then causes him not to be able to send mail. At this point I am trying to find him a permanent solution to his problem. This is not as easy as I thought it would be...

Greetings!
Have you read the contract? Maybe thats a "feature" that has no solution.
Or contacting the tech support. Sometimes it does work as it should.

Helps to keep the meal schedule going, go to the throne room daily, take a 15-30 minute break after lunch (you may call it a "siesta" ) and get at least seven hours of sleep per night. |

Basically is there such thing as a public outgoing server? With email it really does not matter what the outgoing server is as much. Or is there a little "free" program that I can setup a local outgoing mail server on?
I am just throwing out ideas |

Yes - plenty. What do you think all the spammers are using when they send you all those letters about money lost & found in Nigeria, or little blue pills to keep you and lady going all night?
Yep - public outgoing SMPT (mail) servers. And everyone running such a thing should be hung and quartered
What your friend need is an SMTP-server that will accept his e-mails even if the connection is coming from some remote corner of the Internet, instead of only accepting the e-mail when it comes from the ISP's own network.
He need to speak with his ISP about how to achieve this.
Some ISP's have a service, whereby if the external IP-address is logged on to the ISP's POP3-server, then that IP-address is also accepted by the SMTP-server (even if it comes from the evil Internet).
Or maybe his e-mail client can be configured to use IMAP4 instead of POP3/SMTP? I think IMAP4 can be used for sending as well as receiving e-mails.
He could also try to figure out which ISP his connection goes through when he is out roaming. Since he will be "inside" their IP-network, their SMTP-server should accept his connection and the e-mails he wants to send.
As a last resort, you can set up an IP-tunnel he can connect to. If he has a router at home, open up incoming TCP-port 12345 and have the router NAT and forward the TCP-connection to TCP-port 25 @ smtp-server.isp.com. Just watch out for me coming to kill you when the spammers discovers the open TCP-port and use his tunnel to spam me
Maybe you can use of my favorite programs: AnalogX Proxy as an SMTP-proxy. Open up for incoming connections on a PC on your firends ISP's network, and all the ISP's SMTP-server will see is an internal customer sending out e-mails.

| Not sure if you've discounted the idea or not, how about remote access to home PC? |

I hear ya there. 73 1/4hrs so far. Add to that a minimum of 12hrs today.

I whole-heartedly agreed here. The [bar stewards] that open the box, install it but never properly administer it should all be swinging from a tall tree. |
