the winnt.sif i posted has the lines:

[Unattended]
UnattendMode=ProvideDefault

which means you will still be prompted for everything just like a normal install, so you can choose to delete your existing partition and create a new one during the text mode setup just like normal. if you'd like to automate the process, look into the setup manager wizard in the deployment tools, which can automate the entire install process.

Yes, but these files all have '_' on the end of them (nv4_disp.dl_ for example.) Can the XP install use them like this???

Again, sorry for the noob questions.

I experimented on a VIA box at the office to see if I could get the hotfixes and drivers to install... Only 3 hotfixes worked out of like 6, and no matter what I did, Windows would not install the drivers that I placed in the OEM directory (I've followed each and every instruction). But it seems like windows isn't even trying to look for them?

I even went so far as to direct the drivers command thing (I don't really wanna list out all that stuff) to the .inf files... Needless to say, you're awesome instructions, just plain don't work for me... Unless I'm missing something (which is ALWAYS a possiblity :D) But I'm pretty sure I've finally got the whole thing right.... Unless it's the fact that I altered a unattend.txt file that I had generated using the deploy.cab tools... Anyone got one of those OEM instruction CDs kickin around :P

Well, thanks for the great ideas and help luma, I hope you can get me out of this bind :P

I tried 3 times (next time it's going to be a CD-RW - doh!)

Got no errors or anything when working throught the guide but when I rebooted and tried to boot from the CD I got "Could not load NTLDR"

Any ideas?

make sure you are following the instructions for a boot cd carefully - it sounds like you didn't setup the boot image file in nero correctly. make sure you are using the newest release of nero so you have all the options listed in the instructions for creating the boot cd with nero.

I didn't have the very latest but I had all the options listed, and I did copy them like for like. Tried it a couple of times too :( Oh well, will give it another go if I find the time - thanks

like stitch, i can't get the cd to work either. the rest of the unattended stuff works, and it never prompts me for anything (i went a little further and used the setupmgr tool to make a full unattended installation.) However, when i get into windows, the drivers for ethernet, sound, and SMBus weren't installed, even though i set up my paths and winnt.sif file EXACTLY as posted. Any ideas?

I learned one thing new, if the drivers aren't WHQL certified, they will not install.

i got it !

you have to add in the winnt.sif under [Unattended] following line:

DriverSigningPolicy = Ignore

so windows will accept all drivers you give him :)
