BOSTON (Reuters) - Rambus Inc. (Nasdaq:RMBS - news) on Tuesday said that chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NYSE:AMD - news) has agreed to pay $75 million over five years to license Rambus technology for boosting the speed at which computer chips communicate with each other.
The agreement with AMD doesn't cover Rambus patents related to a widely used type of computer memory. |

How do you follow [the on-chip mem controller] up if you are AMD?
That one is easy, you integrate PCIe onto the chip. Latency for just about everything takes another huge whack, and everything from video to 10 GigE gets faster. For the home, you get more frames and better graphics responsiveness. For the business world, you get latency reduction on I/O, latency reduction on I/O, and latency reduction on I/O as the three most important things.
If you were wondering what all those pins on S1207 [M2]were for, wonder no more. If you need I/O that scales with the number of CPUs, look no farther. If you want this from AMD, it will happen. |
Awesome!! At least PCIe graphics cards will carry over if nearly nothing else will. |

"AMD Strikes Intel Viiv with AMD Live!
AMD Unveils Digital Media Vision
Advanced Micro Devices during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) formally announced its AMD Live! program under which partners of the world’s second largest maker of microprocessors will manufacture media center personal computers with advanced set of capabilities for managing digital media."

Sunnyvale, California-based chipmaker did not unveil any particular initiatives regarding its Live! media center computers, ......
But such an approach mean that AMD Live! branded computers will not be able to perform certain functions out of the box, which means that customers acquiring such machines are not guaranteed to get the type of functionality they are looking forward. Potentially, AMD Live! PCs may not offer as lot of functionality as Intel Viiv computers will feature software that will allow to rent, download or purchase content or games; subscribe to services; edit photos or create videos. |
Slant from an Intel lover.
Well duh. Without AMD offering "any particular initiatives", I'd be hard pressed to continue on in stating "not be able to perform certain functions out of the box", "not guaranteed to get the type of functionality" or "Potentially, AMD Live! PCs may not offer as lot of functionality as Intel Viiv computers will feature software"
Potentially, the backside of that authors trousers gayly proclaims "Intel Inside' |

They will also have to incorporate DDR2/3 support in their next CPU, and rambus might have some good tricks up its sleeve.
The PCI-e angle is also good; it could mean that the AMD M2 CPUs will have a very fast PCI communication, and very low latency mem communication...
And it could also help to keep the mem controller working correctly at higher clock speeds, better cache handling by the dual core CPUs, patents necessary to a inovative NUMA implementation... |

Greetings!
"In spite of the fact that Yonah and its successors are going to be great CPUs that will deliver industry-leading performance/watt numbers, Intel has one giant hole in its '06-'07 lineup: interconnect technology. Intel has failed to deliver on a next-generation multiprocessor FSB spec, and that's why AMD's plans to license coherent HyperTransport to other chip vendors could spell trouble for Intel in the coming year."
