An Early Look At OpenSolaris 2008.11 :-

Quote:
In this early OpenSolaris 2008.11 release are many of the same (updated) packages found within Solaris Express Community Edition Build 93. There is Firefox 2.0, GIMP 2.4.5, and the binary NVIDIA Linux driver among them. Stripped away within the OpenSolaris release is the Solaris RealPlayer along with the Adobe Flash plug-in, but there is Sun's other key software project, Java 1.6.

I tried this a few months ago. Stuck Virtualbox on my laptop and installed Ubuntu and Solaris.

Ubuntu went on fine and worked ok. Solaris took twice as long to install and other then a few colours seemed to be exactly the same as Ubuntu except it was very very slow. Dunno why that was. I set generous settings in Vitualbox for resources.

Its since been deleted (along with the Ubuntu).

They both use Gnome, so the general look and feel should be pretty similar... As for the slow performance, that's weird, in real life, Solaris is as fast (or maybe even faster) than Linux, I think...

OpenSolaris seems nice, especially ZFS Drool , too bad driver-wise it's no as good as Linux...

Well I couldnt give either a constructive review really as it was just to take a look see (and play around with virtualbox).

Its hard to be evaluative when you havent really any need to evaluate a product in the first place.

But yes Solaris was rather sluggish but maybe it doesnt like virtualisation as much as some OS's. Could have been a simple config issue.

The laptop it was running is 2.4Ghz/1.5Gb ram with a 7200rpm HDD so not a slouch.

Anyway in a good mood today as I passed my ITIL exam..yesssss!!! Very Happy

IIRC OpenSolaris doesn't run well at all in VirtualBox, so that's a known problem. It's ok on VMWare I think.

But yes, ZFS = Teh Win... Cool

Other than that, it's very fast natively anyway as a Unix distro (and I'd say it's faster than Ubuntu), though as jpr mentioned the driver support is lacking compared to the top tier Linux distros, but you can hack most things to work with it.

In any case it feels a lot more 1337 to run... Laughing
