not sure if this goes into the hardware or software section (feel free to move mr impar )
got myself a very nice little 4GB sony walkman NWZ-A816. It all seems to work fine apart from one thing: when i plug it into my PC (win XP SP3) i can't see it in explorer. Others with same player and OS can see their sony players in explorer, so mine should show up.
I can still upload and remove songs using winamp, and i can see it in the device manager (under portable devices->WALKMAN), but if i go to Disk Management it does not show up. Very odd huh.
It also doesn't show in the 'safely remove hardware' taskbar icon, but when i first plug it in, a mp3 player icon pops up, and autoplay asks if i want to use winamp to manage this or take no action. no other options.
Anyone got any ideas why and how to fix?
I don't have (nor do i want) windows media player installed. |

| but where do you access your 'portable devices'? my walkman doesn't show up in 'my computer' or explorer so i have no way to copy folders into it. |

it doesn't come up under the USB controllers in 'device manager', it comes up under 'windows portable devices'.
I've tried un-installing then re-installing it, but it made no difference. |

found some kind of temp fix. I un-installed the walkman and re-installed as a USB device instead of an MTP.
Now i can see the walkman in Explorer but can no longer use winamp to transfer files. [burger].
Looks like i have to change drivers for the device depending how i want to use it. USB driver for using as flash drive, MTP driver for managing with winamp. |
