J3 jumper ... well I've shorted it and nothing happened ... could be for BIOS flash protection or for disabling onboard GF2 card Smile
btw , .. I've got lucky and got practically new board to play with Very Happy
Now I have 2 spare BIOS chips and way too much spare time ... let's see, what happens *mwuahaha* XD

Hi,

About J3 jumper, I've shorted it too then:
In position 1/2 nothing changed.
In position 2/3 the CPU frequency is locked to genuine CPU settings.
Don't know what it was made for really ???

Another finding:
a graphic AGP8X card NVIDIA FX5500 256MB/DDR doesn't work good with this mobo under Windows, whatever if it is W98 or XP or else !

Good time with your new toy board Laughing

P.S: ftp sources for this board
ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/mb/socka/nforce220/a7n266-vm/

u can find 108nvm01.zip BIOS (last beta release) which works good Razz

Oh, this card is pain in the ass on any board ... couldn't be from Inno3D, could it ?
I know, after years of testing and trying and wasting my time this card wasn't worth even the small amount of money I paid it for.

I've booted it this week and it worked fine, mods will be the next thing to do. :)

So I'm not the only one left in the world still using this board?

I've been using an A7N266-VM/AA for over 5 years and it's never had a problem. It's been a great board.

I'm getting ready to build a new a new computer in the next few weeks/months and was wondering if there might be something I can do to give my old system a little extra power. I'd still like to keep the old system around so the jumper mod scares me a little. Is there any way to maybe over clock the GPU a little? BTW, the processor is a AMD 1800+(Palomino) so I don't think my CPU is capable of going much higher.

Cheers,

Justin

from what have I done with this board, I can tell you there is absolutely no way you will destroy this board.
Ram speed has more impact on performance than sole cpu speed.
You can overclock this graphic chip using rivatuner or powerstrip.

Thanks for the reply, I got my GPU at 220Mhz right now and it seems to be running smoothly so I'll leave it there.

Check the temperaures of the large heatsing on the chip and the nearby regulator. If they are not blazing hot, you should be fine.
Stock freq is 200MHz? :)

GPU-Z says 175. I felt the heatsink after 3 hours and it's barely warm.

I'm an absolute nub when it comes to motherboard configuration etc, etc..

I was just curious, what is the best processor I can put on this MOBO w/o having to do any special mods etc... w/o worrying about destroying my computer, in essence.

Also, what is the max Ram that can be put in here?

I don't want to purchase a new computer, and want to get the best out of this MOBO for my buck.

Thanks for the responses. Sorry for my deficiency in computer lingo!
