Well, I guess that takes care of the warranty question. I'd say the hunt for the serial # would be pointless, now.

It's too bad you don't have a bench test unit, like this one:

It would be perfect for observing the motherboard without the case. You definitely need to bench test your motherboard(s) without the case to see if you notice anything. A faulty CPU fan wouldn't keep the thing from powering up; it just wouldn't run for long.

Without proper testing equipment, and absent following step-by-step procedural tests, I can only speculate that it could be the motherboard or CPU. A fried proc would definitely prevent function. You had "stock fan" in the specs; got more detail? Was the proc a retail pack and the fan came with it? Or was this a nondescript item you bought separately?

No, Gigabyte offer a parts replacement warranty during the third year, although labor isn't covered. They also repair mobos, which might be a good idea as 939 pin mobos are so scarce.

That 'test station' link you posted, isn't that just a jig ?

If that's still an option:

Don't know what you mean here by the word "jig." But that was just a quick and readily available illustration. A couple of months ago, I found a retailer online that sold a nice little box of switches with generic wires (I guess that would be leads for your location) and connectors for motherboards. It wasn't expensive and seemed like a handy way of bench testing a board w/out using a case at all. Can't figure out what I did with the link to that and I'm unable to turn it up in search, but you get the idea.

OK, I'm sorted. It was the PSU after all. I connected the new one and the machine came up.
Apparently, PSU testers don't put a load on the PSU so they can't simulate the correct conditions.

I now have a spare 939 mobo, so I might as well get a spare 939 pin CPU too, while they're available and cheap.

Thanks to all for the help.

Glad you were able to indentify the problem source.

Merry Christmas!
