this may be some use to those with the other chipset boards. some where else to look for the problem.

your external wouldn't be a wd usb/firewire would it?
i had a soyo kt600 ultra platinum that did the same thing with my western digital external. it worked fine with my other rigs. sometimes i would get it to ring up a drive letter but was unable to read what was on the drive. most of the time it wouldn't load the drivers.
i run windows 2000. i still have the board and will try to do a fresh install of windows to see if that what is needed. maybe this weekend i can set it up on a table and see if that solves it.

yesterday i added a partition and did a fresh install. after doing all windows updates i plugged in the western digital combo and it functioned. until i rebooted and as before in the device manager produced an error code. after messing with alternate drivers, etc. , no luck. i finally found that if i uninstalled the combo, usb2 root hub and the via enchanced host controller that windows picked up the combo and it would work. on reboot the problem would reaccure. i then disable the root hub and the via inhanced drivers and again the combo worked. then rebooted and the combo worked.
so for me and the via board, that solved things but what the fix is i don't have an answer. i retiriing the board for awhile, so it won't be an issue.

I have solved the problem (external USB drive) by swapping the USB cables on PC ports. That caused new installation of drivers for external hub etc.
Probably the problem occured after updating board BIOS from 1.0 to 1.7 . (I did it because USB mouse was lost after every wake up from stand by. - BIOS update solved it.) |

Sorry I have been away for a while, during this time I have solved my problem.
I did a BIOS update then I use a different USB port and it worked now.
Thx for all the replies. |
