Carmack: PCs Not Important As Consoles :-

Quote:
As primarily a developer on the PC, few know the shifts in the industry as well as id Software. Constantly are doom-and-gloom reports about how the PC is falling to the wayside of consoles, some even blaming piracy. Carmack isn’t so convinced: “Well, it’s hard to second guess exactly what the reasons are. You can say piracy. You can say user migration. But the ground truth is just that the sales numbers on the PC are not what they used to be and are not what they are on the consoles.”

Never is the shift from PC to console more abundantly clear than when Carmack asserts, “We still think the PC is a market worth supporting, but we’re not making decision around the PC. It’s probably more of the junior partner in the cross-platform strategy, although obviously, our day-to-day development is predominately on the PC.”

EA: PC FIFA '09 Gimped Because Your Computers Suck :-

Quote:
The PC version of FIFA 09 is different to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions because of the CPU processing power required for the architecture of the game.

The majority of gamer's PC's do not have enough CPU processing power for this architecture, so FIFA09 on PC has been built to have the best possible graphics and gameplay engine while still being accessible to as many fans of the game as possible. If the architecture was identical to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions, FIFA09 on PC would only be accessible to 1-3% of the PC systems on the market.

Gamestop: PC game sales are down :-

Quote:
Talking to Gamasutra, GameStop executives have revealed that PC sales in their stores are down from a year ago, with the number of new PC retail games "down probably more than what I had anticipated", according to SVP Bob McKenzie -- but with spikes for key games like Spore and digital downloads.

In a Gamasutra interview with GameStop's Bob McKenzie, SVP of merchandising, and Tony Bartel, EVP of merchandise and marketing, to be published in full tomorrow, the duo was asked about the performance of PC games at the major specialty retailer.

Mackenzie explained that PC retail game sales at the specialty retailer, which operates 5,557 retail stores in 16 countries worldwide, are "down from a year ago. We had planned for it to be down. Again, the number of new titles we have on PC is down probably more than what I had anticipated it would be down -- but I don't see that as a threat or a signaling, we're not backing away from it at all."

And if EA continues with the current DRM scheme it will get worse.

Seems like it's caught in a Catch 22 though, piracy > DRM > more piracy.

I think it's crazy why they can't just allow unlimited activations, and have some kind of system which checks your serial key if you go online to make sure the game is being played on just one system/account at any one time (which is how I always assumed Steam worked with HL2 etc).

Though on the PS3 for example, I like the way you can share games you download via PSN with other people, my friend linked his PSP to my PS3 the other day and I 'gave' him a copy of Wipeout direct from my HDD, and your allowed to do this up to five times legally.

The good services (Impulse and Steam) are login based rather than activation based. That's so much less of a hassle. It's obvious that companies are just reacting to the piracy rather than acting responsibly...and the ability of people to pirate is far outstripping the ability to enforce the laws.

If the enforcement was done better, the companies wouldn't be so afraid of pirates. I'll be surprised if ALL games aren't login enabled by the time five years is out.

JPR: PC gaming hardware market is 'bigger than thought'

Some say PC gaming is dying, but numbers compiled by market research firm Jon Peddie Research suggest the contrary. The firm's latest report says the PC gaming hardware market as a whole will be worth "just over $20 billion" this year, and it expects that figure to jump to $34 billion by 2012.

Problem is not the gaming capable PCs sales, its the PC games sales.

Honestly, I can't afford buying 50+ EUR games, especially considering that lately I have very little time to play. I guess I'm not the only one (blame the financial crisiy!), maybe that's another reason why PC games sales are decreasing.

I used to pirate games some years ago (as Impar can probably attest, everyone does it here in Portugal. I'm the only person I know that buys games/music/DVDs, that should tell you something), now (except for some rare exceptions), my budget for games is about 20 EUR tops. Games seem to get pricier by the year. A few years ago, some new releases cost about 40 EUR. Now, most new games are about 50~60EUR.
Although the price is the similar to other parts of the world, bear in mind that here that's about 10% of the minimal wage..!

And yeah, DRM makes matters worse in my opinion. Games get pirated whether they have DRM or not. The pirating crowd that just downloads everything that shows up in their favourite torrent site will always continue to do that.

[pee] the legit, buying customers, and they might just join them.
