Wire Trick Tutorial
[Works on all models]
By Abb
Original thread

I unlocked the lower multipliers an easier way that is safe and does not modify the CPU at all. I simply put a wire in the socket where the 2 pins are that would originaly be tied using the wire trick. I simply used a strand of copper speaker wire, put it in the socket, bent it and then just bent the other side, cut it and inserted it into the socket. Now you put the CPU in the socket (it will be a little tight with the wire, but it will fit in nicely). Right off the bat I was able to access the 166mhz fsb using a 12.5 multiplier. I now have the CPU running successfully and very stable at 12x180mhz fsb. Here are the holes that you have to put the wire in:

UPDATE: 08/10/2003
MarginJohn has submitted an alternative to using a wire: Soldering the pin points on the back of the motherboard. This should do exactly the same job as the wire trick, but keep in mind that it is permanent and involves soldering.

Here's a pic of the points you've got to solder:

With "work with all models" you mean all Athlon XPs (Barton, Troughbred, etc), right?

No, I mean on motherboards, it doesn't work on Palaminos, but Bartons and Thoroughbreds are ok though, methinks.

This is basically for those 2100+ and higher (133mhz fsb models) or chips with 13x multiplier that want lower multiplier... so long as you can change the multiplier in the BIOS, this'll work for you.

And I dont think it works with palos either... :/ unless they're unlocked first.

In my case, I have a Barton 2800+. I can't get any higher multis than 12.5 (13 turns into 5, 13.5 into 5.5 etc). Will this wiretrick give me genuine higher speeds?

Thanks,

MagicBox,some people report multiplier success once they have reflashed their Bios using the "clean flash procedure", which is described in Nerbil's tutorial. Check it out.

I went to check the guide. Unfortunately I've already flashed my BIOS up to 1006, using a boot disk. I didn't use the switches though. I simply answered them when the flashprogram prompted me for them. I'll reflash the BIOS with 1006. But maybe I should use and older bios? Or one of these über BIOSes?

Any ideas appreciated, thanks

A couple of points.

This will work with pally's as long as the L1 bridges are closed.

I use a switch wired to the back of the MB (AJ27 to 100ohm resistor to switch to ground). This allows me to have a CPU with a default 13X and over to either have >12.5 or <13, depending on my mood (yes, I'm a moody sob). The system has to be shut down and the cmos should be cleared before booting.

This btw, is an AMD hack and is not just for NF2 boards.

This is the site that most have drawn from for these mods.
