Hello, I am new here.
I just bought a new motherboard by ECS called KN1 SLI EXTREME using nforce 4 Sli cheapset, I installed it and everything went fine except I cannot get my external hard disk to work. When I plugged it in, XP says it is an unknow USB device but I checked it with other computer and the hard disk work. Also other USB devices work on this new motherboard except the hard disk.
I installed the latest BIOS and driver for the motherboard.
Any help would be welcome.
Thanks |

your external wouldn't be a wd usb/firewire would it?
i had a soyo kt600 ultra platinum that did the same thing with my western digital external. it worked fine with my other rigs. sometimes i would get it to ring up a drive letter but was unable to read what was on the drive. most of the time it wouldn't load the drivers.
i run windows 2000. i still have the board and will try to do a fresh install of windows to see if that what is needed. maybe this weekend i can set it up on a table and see if that solves it.

What other drives do you have internally. NF4 boards will often show an SATA drive as a removable device in the system tray (ie the little removable hardware icon is present and shows the HD as a removable driver which I guess is true as they should be swapable). I take it that your USB 2 drivers are installed and up and running properly. What kind of drive and enclosure etc are we dealing with here? There are some compatibility issues with some drives and some enclosures hopefully that isn't the issue.
One of the most common isues with these NF4 rigs is trying to run them with an inadequate power supply. Often the boards will run but they will run amuck if you catch my drift. Some more specs would sure be helpful. Keep us posted. |

My external HD is a generic one, it is actually an IDE hard disk put in an IDE-to-USB box to make it portable. It still works on other computer, i.e. my laptop, my brothers' computers, but just not on my own desktop which I just upgraded. And yes, I have a SATA drive as my main hard disk and indeed NF4 shows it as a removable drive if I select it as a performance drive. In terms of my system component, I list them here:
Athlon 64 X2 4200+
ECS KN1 SLI Extreme
Leadtek 7800 GT Extreme
4 x 256Mb Corsair XMS 3200 PT (which makes the system runs on slower memory settings since using all four memory banks)
Tagan 420W PSU
Maxtor 120Gb SATA drive |

| I have the same problem: bought and installed new motherboard MSI K8N Diamond (nForce4 chipset) into Windows 2000 system. Since then my external drive (notebook disk in Vosonic 3320 USB case) doesnt work correctly. Other USB devices work. This external drive works correctly on other systems. |

| I have Win2000 SP4. The drive worked with the previous motherbord/processor EPox 8RDA (nForce2)/AthlonXP 2600+. It doesn't work after mobo/processor change to MSI K8N Diamond (nForce4)/Athlon 64 3000+. |
