Doing a bit of alpha testing on Ubuntu 8.10 recently :-
I do quite like it, it's definitely a 'performance' update this time IMHO, everything feels sharper/faster than 8.04 (even with the Intel Atom).
I quite like the new 'NewHuman' theme also, very noir.... |

Well I must say I'm really liking the Alpha 6 with the new 2.6.27 kernel, everything is very stable for me (no problems CPU folding 24/7 etc) and it all seems to work.
The way the dark 'New Human' theme is semi-translucent really works well on many different types of desktop wallpaper, and is a nice departure from the standard 'brown'.

Serious problem with the latest e1000e driver (Intel GigE Nic) :-
| Quote: |
Due to an unresolved bug in the Linux kernel included in these images, they should not be used on Intel ethernet hardware supported by the e1000e driver (Intel GigE). Doing so may render your network hardware permanently inoperable.
Older Intel ethernet hardware which uses the e1000 driver is not affected by this; however, some hardware which used the e1000 driver in previous Ubuntu releases, such as hardware that uses a PCI Express bus, has been moved from e1000 to e1000e in the latest kernel releases. If in doubt, do not use these images, and subscribe to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/263555 to be notified when the bug is fixed. |

In some circumstances it appears possible for the 2.6.27-rc kernels to corrupt the NVRAM used by some Intel network parts to store data such as MAC addresses.
This is limited to the new e1000e driver, and reports have only appeared from users of "82566 and 82567 based LAN parts (ich8 and ich9)" (to quote Intel). The reports seem to be isolated to laptops, but it is not clear if this is because desktop/server parts are not vulnerable, or if use cases simply increase the chances of laptop users being hit.
Once this corruption has occurred, recovery may be possible via a BIOS update, but may well require replacement of the hardware. Use of Intel's IABUTIL.EXE is strongly discouraged, as it will worsen the problem to the point where the network part will no longer appear on the PCI bus. |

No [Eartha Kitt], it's not distro specific either...

When is the official release of 8.10? I've been running Hardy for awhile now, and I love it! Very stable, and I've had zero issues. Makes me a little hesitant to upgrade to 8.10 when it comes out. I might just throw 8.10 on the laptop to give it a try.
I like how when you hover over the weather applet, it has the little window that pops up. I wish that the weather applet in Hardy, was more like the one in xubuntu though. It's a much more visually appealing layout.
