So you are saying I don't need RAID? Or I can't do it? Or both? Smile

In Vsta-----I just got an optional windows update today for: NVIDIA Corporation driver update for NVIDIA nForce Serial ATA Controller

Download size: 321 KB

You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect.

Update type: Optional

This driver was provided by NVIDIA Corporation for support of NVIDIA nForce Serial ATA Controller

It is dated 5/7/08

Tried it and BSOD immediately upon reboot----rolled back to "Last Known good configuration" and am back to normal.

am running 9.99.0.9 versions of the nForce RAID controller and the nForce Serial ATA Contrioller.

My Board is a Biostar Tforce 6100-939 410 Chipset board.....

This seems to happen with EVERY Windows update to the nForce Serial ATA Controller

Fernando---you helped me fix this once a while back so I could update to Vista SP1----now it seems we are back in the same situation with Windows update not recognizing the right stuff.....

Any ideas what is up??

Since you don't have RAID enabled within the BIOS and don't have created a RAID array by using the RAID BIOS Utility, you have nothing to do with RAID.
As long as your OS doesn't detect any RAID Controller it will not install any nForce RAID driver.
The SATA_IDE driver folder is the only one, which is suitable for your hardware configuration.

You should disable the automatic update function of your OS.
This is a wellknown issue of Windows Update and the reason, why my guide (start post of this thread) contains the following warning message:

  • Do not accept any update of the nForce SataRaid drivers offered by the Windows Update Service unless you have got the information, that this will be safe! Many users reported about severe problems after having updated their nForce SataRaid drivers this way.

This is what confuses me. According to this http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_28653.html
"sata_ide
--------
This folder is NOT used for installation. This folder contains a non-RAID driver.
When installing with RAID disabled in the BIOS, the Windows storage driver is used.
Once OS install is complete then this driver can be installed using package setup."

Wouldn't you use the non-raid driver on a fresh installation in order to get the drive recognized to be able to install on a single sata drive?
All actual Windows Operating Systems prefer to use the MS IDE drivers instead of the third party S-ATA drivers unless the S-ATA Controllers are set as AHCI mode.
If you don't have AHCI enabled within your BIOS, you can install Vista without loading any special nForce S-ATA driver. Once vista is up, it is no problem to install the nForce S-ATA driver by loading the SATA_IDE folder of your package.
What exactly is your problem with the SATA_IDE drivers?

I am not having a problem I just wanted to understand the difference between the SATAIDE and the SATARAID. I guess the confusing part was having "SATA" in front of "IDE", when it only involves connecting an ATA drive. All my google searches were coming up empty.

Since I am writing again I thought I would ask what driver package you recommend for both xp and vista? The p5nsli northbridge is the C19 and the southbridge is the MCP51. BTW I prefer to use signed drivers.

Also is there a thread on this forum that discusses how to make the floppy disk with you driver packages for xp. They are too big for one disk.

Thanks for all your time and effort Fernando.

It is not easy to recommend just 1 package, because the users preferences are different.
If you want WHQL signed drivers, you should choose the following packs:

A.For Vista:
You can use either the actual 32bit "Best Value NF4-6 WHQL Driver Pack" or this package with WHQL signed nForce IDE drivers v9.99.09.

B. For XP:
You have the choice between the 32bit "Newest/best NF4-6 WHQL Driver Pack" or the 32bit "NF4-6 RAID Performance Pack" (you can replace the IDE folder by the one of this official package, if you want WHQL signed IDE drivers).

Don't use the F6/floppy method. It is better and safer to slipstream the nForce SataRaid drivers into an XP CD by using a tool like nLite.
Here is my guide.

One more stupid question
If I add another ATA HDD for extra storage would I need to install The SATA_IDE drivers also.

If you add a non-Raid hdd, Vista will automaticly install the Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller for managing this hdd.
If the extra hdd is a natively IDE (=P-ATA) connected one, you won't get any problems, but if it is a S-ATA connected one, you will not see it within the explorer.
Solution in the latter case: Replace the "Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller" by the compatible "NVIDIA Serial ATA Controller" by loading the SATA_IDE folder of the previously used nForce chipset package.
