Greetings!

R700 boards are planned for introduction within the next seven weeks and if we trust our sources, then we should expect the Phenom 9950 in a similar timeframe. The 790GX chipset will ship with two new Southbridge chips - the SB700 and SB750 will also arrive in time for these new products. So, we are taking note: AMD will have an overclockable graphics card, an overclockable processor and an overclocker-friendly chipset.

Is AMD on back on track? We think so.

I'm excited them to finally be able to show the product lineup they wanted. ATI made some pretty dang good chipsets before the merge and together they do make a pretty good team, even if financially they may not be so hot at the moment.

I REALLY want a Puma. I REALLY have no idea when I'll be able to get one.

AMD is working on PCIe 3.0 support

It looks like the SB800, a dynamic duo chipset which is a mixture of upcoming RD890 and RS880 chipsets, is going to bring PCIe 3.0 support to the world.

About time. I don't know if a lack of other benefits was affecting him but he did NOT deserve the highest salary in the semiconductor industry.

AMD revving up Atom competitor, but details remain foggy

Last Thursday, newly appointed AMD CEO Dirk Meyer confirmed that AMD was building its own low-power CPU core to compete with Intel's Atom. Details on the chip are still sketchy—Meyer stated that additional information would be revealed in November—but the announcement does confirm earlier speculation that AMD would attempt to enter the nascent netbook/nettop market with a design of its own.
...
AMD has to make do with what it has until Bobcat is ready, and the CPU pictured above would make perfect sense as a bridge product. The 8W TDP will likely position this chip at the relative top of Atom's competitive range, and it may actually compete more directly against the VIA Nano than the Atom. Even if this interim design isn't the full Atom competitor that Bobcat is meant to be, it gives AMD a foot in the door of the netbook market, and a chance to test the waters.

But this is where it gets weird: supposedly, the higher clock speeds will be tied to SB700 and SB750 south bridge chips. The more recent the south bridge, the higher the clock speed.

AMD promised, AMD delivered:
AMD SB750 arrives on the Foxconn A79A-S...

We have reached 3.3GHz on this CPU with further tuning of system settings including individual core tuning with ACC. While our initial 100MHz speed increase may not sound impressive, we must consider the fact that this CPU was right on the ragged edge of stability at 3.1GHz. We are now able to run higher NB clock speeds and higher core clock speeds at lower voltages while maintaining a fair amount of headroom for further performance improvements. Even more impressive (results tomorrow) is that fact that this CPU will now clock to 3GHz on stock voltages instead of 2.7GHz before tuning with ACC.

AMD's SB750: Enabling Higher Phenom Overclocks?

The web has been alive with rumors of an upcoming update to AMD's 7-series chipsets that will somehow unlock the true overclocking potential of its Phenom processors. The rumor goes something like this: an updated South Bridge (SB750) will improve communication with Phenom, removing a previous bottleneck and improving the maximum overclock possible. We can't begin to explain the many issues with the various rumors, but we have to allow that somewhere buried deep in these rumors there is a morsel of truth.
