That's cool. I wonder if they'll update UT3 to use it or not.

I don't think the game needs updating at all, the Ageia software handles that side of things by basically recognizing the GPU as a PPU.

Very possibly, but it depends on how it was coded I'd think.

Nvidia Supports ATI Radeon PhysX Efforts

You gotta love this industry. 12 days ago, we reported about a website making progress in getting Nvidia’s CUDA platform and PhysX to run on ATI Radeon cards, which Nvidia denied would be possible. Some even claimed that such a tool was a planned hoax. Now we are told that developer Eran Badit has not only been invited to join Nvidia’s developer program, but has also been offered hands-on help. Here is an update to a fascinating story that may soon bring PhysX support to your Radeon graphics card.

You know I don't think so. This is one area where a vendor specific implementation would be used by extremely few people.

Does AMD block PhysX on Radeon development?

A few weeks ago, we learned how Nvidia is using its PhysX API to convert PhysX calculations and accelerate them on a GPU. AMD wasn’t happy and Nvidia was accused of benchmark cheating. Now there is an opportunity to get PhysX to run on AMD/ATI cards, but there seem to be some roadblocks and there is a certain suspicion that AMD does not want Nvidia’s CUDA and PhysX to run on its graphics cards. We chatted with AMD’s Godfrey Cheng to get more details on this issue as well as AMD’s physics strategy.

NVIDIA GPU PhysX Pack Preview

We've already seen some information on PhysX with regards to 3DMark Vantage and Unreal Tournament 3. Today, we get to take a glimpse into what else NVIDIA has been up to with PhysX, ...

PhysX Performance with GeForce

In-game physics. It’s a topic that’s been discussed extensively over the last several years. Some see it as the missing link that’s capable of truly delivering immersive games. Others consider it an overly hyped gimmick. Whatever your stance on the topic is, one thing is certain, with AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA, as well as thousands of game developers all devoting resources to physics, it’s only going to become more prevalent as time goes on.

A first look at Nvidia's GPU physics
Explosions, tornadoes, and tapioca soup

If you'd told me a year ago that my PC would have hardware PhysX support today, I'd have been a little dubious. Last summer, running hardware game physics simulations involved shelling out $150-200 for a PhysX card, and all you got for your investment was limited support in a handful of titles. Not exactly a stocking-stuffer.

That will all change next week. On August 12, Nvidia will release new graphics drivers that will allow owners of most GeForce 8, GeForce 9, and GeForce GTX 200-series cards to use PhysX acceleration without spending a dime.

And Empire Total War is on the list of upcoming titles to support PhysX.
Postponed my GPU upgrade.

Roy Taylor on Physics, AI and making games fun

At this year’s Nvision conference in San Jose, I managed to catch up with Roy Taylor to talk about some of the current issues surrounding the gaming industry. Roy is vice president of content relations at Nvidia and is also head of the marketing sub-committee in the PC Gaming Alliance, which means he spends a lot of his time talking with gamers, developers and some of the big industry decision makers.
