Well, I've been able to narrow it down to my 7800GTX - it's some driver issue but I'm still not sure exactly what. I've tried reinstalling the drivers of coruse as well as installing different versions. The one game that starts up is HalfLife 2 Lost Coast altho it will get always get a BSOD at some point. Here's the memory dump:
OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.256.1

BCP3: 9D39BC04
BCP4: 00000000
OS Version: 6_0_6000

Hmm well I've been using Ultimate on a dual core laptop for a couple of days and I have to say the perfomance/usability compared to Vista Basic is a bit well...lumpy.
Takes ages to settle down after boot up as well.
Glad I went with Basic. |

The only problem with Vista Premium/Ultimate on laptops is the video chipset really. Any ver of Vista does some self tuning so resource usage settles down after a while of course.
Many of those in a position to test however said that many OEM laptop builds use some terrible apps and drivers completely unsuited to Vista which are causing people to have bad experiences. They said when they wiped the machine and did a fresh install, the laptop worked great. |

I've used Vista Ultimate x64 on a 2Ghz C2D Laptop w/945GM graphics and it performs just as well as any other version of Vista I've used with Aero, but yes it was fresh installed by me with a retail disc, so no OEM crap etc.
I'd say having a nice speedy 7200rpm HDD helps tons in a Laptop more than anything else, and 2GB+ of memory doesn't hurt either. |

Actually I've used an old Celeron laptop with 1gig and Ultimate (don't know the processor speed, I think it was either 1.2 or 1.6) and I didn't see any performance issues.
I also used a newer HP AMD laptop with Premium (my brothers box)...even without SP1 on it it was very nice. I, of course, had to update it cause my bros as clueless as my mom is. :p
