Time for an upgrade?

Postby triggert » Thu Oct 21, 2010 9:14 pm

I got Fallout: New Vegas. Love the game but I'm having a hard time running it with my current setup. I've got my setup listed below. Is there somethin I can upgrade to improve the game? Or just scrap everything and start fresh? What's your opinion?

ASUS P5K DELUXE/WIFI-AP LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor (Overclocked to 3Ghz)
EVGA GeForce GTX 260 SSC Edition 896MB 448-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16
CORSAIR XMS2 4GB (4 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3320620AS 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive x 2 RAID 0
PC Power & Cooling 510 SLI 510W Power Supply
Antec P180 Case
22" Acer AL2223W

I've got about a $1000 budget so lets do this.

I'd just save your money and put a GTX460 (or a 470 if feeling a bit more flush) in and leave it at that. That will keep you going another 18 months.

Seriously. Why spend all that when you dont need to? The core of the system is fine.

I'd just change the GPU on that. The CPU still has enough oomph.

Maybe see what AMD announces today?

After some research I was considering the following:

Intel Core i5-750 Lynnfield 2.66GHz LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Processor BX80605I5750
ASUS P7P55D Deluxe LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Intel Motherboard
GeForce GTX 460 1GB SLi

I would expect a pretty good jump in performance compared to what I've got. How would this setup stack up to just upgrading the GPU with my current system.

Well why not just upgrade the GPU side first? See how much of a difference it makes. If it does the trick, job done.

If you buy all the other stuff and put it all in on one go you'll never know and probably spent $700 extra for little real gain. For gaming, GPU is 80% of the battle. You have a decent quad there already.

To be honest. I'd wait a week or so and see what Nvidia does about the 460/470 pricing and maybe get one of those and a SSD. Those two items will probably transform your system more than the CPU/Motherboard/Ram part and for a fraction of the $1000 budget.

What makes you think the pricing on these two cards will drop in the next week?

Well the AMD 6800 series launch this week.

I'd keep an eye out.
