Hi,

Could anyone advise on upgrading my sons SN41 V1 XPC?

I would like to install an AGP graphics card and stop using the on-board graphics. I am in the UK and looking to spend about £100 on a graphics card so could anyone recommend a good card for that price that will work in the XPC?

I have been given an AMD 2600+ Barton CPU and was hoping to install that as an upgrade to the current AMD 2000+ CPU that is currently in there. The Barton is of course a 200 FSB CPU.

Will this work in the V1 motherboard and should I upgrade the BIOS to the latest one in order to install this?

The memory is pretty slow running at a bus speed of 133 like the AMD 2000 cpu.

If the CPU and graphics cards are OK I may upgrade the memory as well but I assume the fastest this m/b will support is 333 i.e. memory running at a bus speed of 166. Is that correct?

Thanks in advance.

Dave

I don't know about the graphics card, but the CPU should work just fine.

I have an AMD 2600+ Thoroughbred in my SN41G2 (see link). I can't run it with a 200 MHz FSB due to the on-board graphics, so I keep it at 166 MHz.

Looking at the BIOS release notes, the Barton have been supported since FN41S015. Although there is a note for the FN41S032 revision:
Quote:
Date code: 04/22/2005 Checksum: 3F00
Barton CPU now showing correctly.

If you know how to upgrade the BIOS, I would do it (but it can render the PC useless if you screw it up - check out the IOSS RD1-PMC2 BIOS Savior).

The Barton could be a Problem: The Mo bo doesn't support more than FSB 166!
I have upgraded to an Barton 3000+ with FSB 166 an it works.

As Graphic I use an AGP 8x Radeon 9600...
