Hello everyone, I recently purchased a GA-MA78GM-S2H motherboard and am running into all sorts of problems getting windows installed. The machine will POST but once it begins to boot from a HDD the screen will go black and crash nearly instantly forcing a restart by turning the PSU on and off. I have updated the BIOS to the most recent version, tried unseating everything (Video card, Sound Card, Different Ram modules in different channels, turning SATA off and installing to an IDE HDD, disabling IDE and installing to an IDE HDD. Turning pretty much every BIOS setting on and off including and most importantly probably, playing the the Generic IDE mode or AHCI mode for SATA devices, and I am still stumped. I even was able to boot the machine in LIVE XP a preinstalled environment, but have not been able to get the installation to go past the restart after formatting the drive and copying the requisite files. Below I have listed the system specifics. Please let me know if you have any suggestions from your personal experiences.
Thank you,
Ryan

Hi
You tell anything except which ram, you have, and which windows. The board is unable to adjust memory voltage more up than 2.1 volt. Some ram require more, but standard is 1.8 volt. Ctrl F1 gives you the menu point in bios for adjusting memory voltage. Try with 0.1 volt more than specified for the ram, if possible. The DS3H board can give ram up to 2.5 volt.
Next: the board is born with only only ide-port, and I am sad to say that ide-harddisks are uncommon nowadays. This ide-port is suited for an optical drive. Will the bios select the ide-harddisk as boot-media ? I say so why sata is said (in bios) to emulate ide. Maybe it is worth a try not disabling sata, but just let it unconnected. The giga-byte site contains a separate sata raid driver for it. It can be contained on a floppy. You could try making such a floppy and press F6 during install to use it, because one could assume that it should be used for a common process. This is a guess but I am not sure. I am stumped on this sata ide emulation.
I use my ma78gm-s2h with linux (ubuntu 8.04) and just installed it yesterday. Maybe you should also try that. So I cannot say I have experience with windows install on it, yet. |

Well, I now have installed windows XP on a sata harddisk and saw no problems. Except that my harddisk was polluted with some linux partitions and MBR. Booting on a 'windows 98 floppy' and using F-disk for 'fdisk /mbr' and non-dos partitions clenup, and make startable primary partition: that made XP boot up on the harddisk after file install. I also used a sata floppy with F6.
But graphics: although I have 2 Gbyte ram running in dual-mode, I see now and then some noise on the screen (with onboard graphics). Have anybody else seen that ? Onboard graphics use to be errorfree, but slow. |

| You were completely right. One ram stick was bad. |
