NVIDIA Roadmap Suggests DirectX 10.1 GPU in Q4 2008, GDDR5 in 2008 :-

Quote:
TG Daily stumbled across roadmap information of NVIDIA which provides certain details of the green giant's DirectX 10.1 implementation plans. Currently, ATI and S3 Graphics make graphics processors (GPU) compliant to DirectX 10.1 specifications. In a presentation slide, are seen plans of NVIDIA coming up with a brand new fleet of mobile (notebook) DirectX 10.1 graphics processors slated for spring 2009 and desktop GPUs either for late Q4 2008 or early 2009 with a possible ramp throughout Q1 and Q2 of 2009.

This gives competitors at least a 6-month time advantage in which they could build developer relations and aid development of games based on the DirectX 10.1 API since it's now certain that the API is going to become an industry-wide standard, with the biggest player in the discrete-graphics industry having plans to embrace it.

The second revelation that slide brings up is that NVIDIA will implement GDDR5 memory with its upcoming products within 2008.

Nvidia takes axe to GeForce GTX 260, 280 prices

Not all was quiet at Nvidia headquarters this July 4 weekend. The rumor mill wound up with news of forthcoming price cuts last week, and HotHardware reported on Thursday that Nvidia would push the GeForce GTX 280 from $649 to $499 and the GTX 260 from $399 to a lower figure. Those predictions didn't take long to come to fruition, as a cursory check through Newegg's listings confirms.

Still too expensive.

Yep I can now believe it, as I've mentioned in a couple of other threads my 8600GTS bit the dust earlier today, the first Nvidia card I've had fail on me since 1999 (which was an OC'ed GeForce 256 SDR).

I'm interested in the ramifications of this, as I'm putting in for a warranty replacement with EVGA but it looks like there are currently no 8600GTS 512MB cards instock at the factory, and I wonder if a large amount of G84/86's are failing then I doubt that Nvidia will have enough older replacements to go around, maybe we'll get 9600GT's instead...?

Seems like it's going to cost them a whole heap production hassle nevermind the raw cash... Wink

Nvidia: GPU failures don't affect desktops
...
The Inquirer reported a few days later that all of Nvidia's G84 and G86 graphics processors were in fact failure-prone—even the ones in desktop graphics cards. Nvidia chose not to reply to our request for comment on that story, but the folks at Ars Technica were apparently luckier. They've received a statement from the company reiterating that the failures don't affect desktop parts.
