hi all, i'm new to this forum, but have been "lurking" for along time ! the only problems i have had with the nvidea drivers are with the 2.03's my hd's clicked and showed as SCSI then i went to the 2.41's and i had the problem when restarting the hd's would power right down ! thats the only problems ive had with my Asus NON deluxe and nvidea drivers ... currently running the asus drivers that came with the mobo.. they're slow but no weird clicks or cold restarts ! i'll be keeping them till nvidea corrects the problems ... :)

Asus A7N8X Deluxe PCB 2.0 BIOS 1005
Athlon 3000+
XP SP1 all updates
(0,0) Maxtor 40GB
(0,1) WD 120GB SE
(1,0) Pioneer DVR-103
(1,1) TDK 40/12/48 CDRW (Lite-on)

2.41 was quite horrifying, BSODs, no CDRWin, failed burns, corrupt data on HD, you name it.

The best I have been able to do: Reformatted and installed 2.03 driver package with IDE drivers removed. I did this by extracting the files from the EXE, deleting the IDE folder, then installing. It will run fine and just skip over the IDE installation without an error. I know I could have installed the driver and just manually chosen the standard MS one later, but I was so p*** off about everything I wanted to be sure it wasn't in there.

Anywho, the remaining issues I have with 2.03 + standard IDE drivers:

- Fairly poor HD performance but no long bootup times or anything too bad like some of you report. No "powering off and back up" during reboots (although that did happen with 2.41.) Just little things like when I choose a logical drive to browse, it takes a good 3 or 4 seconds to display the root directory.

- Nero can't burn DVDs. Blank media is detected but rejected for "not having enough space". However I can burn CDs with it on the TDK drive, and RecordNowMax will burn DVDs. CDRWin works fine. Instantcopy (dvd prog) will also claim the DVD-R doesn't have enough space, but I can choose "ignore" and it will burn.

- Also had problems burning DVD movies that were decrypted/ripped from an original. Errors in all programs when trying to record. Finally discovered it was the ripping process that was somehow corrupting the data. The problem does not arise if I rip the DVD from my other computer and save it to a networked drive on this computer... then I can burn OK.

So basically, just my DVD burner has issues but i'm finding ways around them for now. Swapping slave/master settings on the DVDRW and CDRW made no difference.

I haven't noticed any audio issues... and games seem to run OK. Also, everything is in proper UDMA modes, no problems there.

I have never had so much trouble with one mainboard. Actually 2: had to RMA the first.

Basically, EPOX 8rda+, Kingmax DDR 2x 215, Athlon 1800+, Seagate 7200 ATA 100 40 G. HD, MSI Dragonwriter 52x24x52 (IDE), Pine 16X DVD ROM, sony FDD, ATI Radeon All-in-Wonder 64 MB 8500 DV. Enermax 350 PS, FWIW. Win XP Pro.

ALL HARDWARE IS VERIFIED. It's not the hardware.

HD is primary master alone, CD-RW is 2nd master, DVD is 2nd slave.

All jumpers and cables and connections and etc. are verified.

Can't use CD-RW at all. It's is recognized as CD drive in Windows. I can open and shut it, but it reads nothing, does nothing. It's properly recognized in BIOS, but not in Windows.

DVD is recognized as CD drive, functions as a CD reader only. It's properly recognized in BIOS, just not in Windows.

I tried the out of box drivers, the deadly 2.41 drivers, the 2.00 drivers, the 2.03 drivers: no joy.

All software was loaded as recomended and under ideal conditions.

I just flashed the BIOS with the magic utility, which I like. The board is very fast and I would love to keep it, but if I can't use my CD writer and my DVD I'm RMAing this one too, and trading it in for a VIA chipset board.

1 Gigabyte GA-7NNXP Nforce2 with Liteon 48/12/48 CDRW

2 Gigabyte & Liteon

3 BIOS firmware vF6, Lieon Firmware v A08

4 nforce2 v2.03 (SCSI emulation)

5 Windows XP SP1

6 When burning at first there were no problems. Two CDs were copied successfully. Then drive would spin up to begin burn and suddenly DVD on same IDE channel would try to spin up too (with no disc in drive), CDRW would spin down and begin to spin up again. This would repeat indefinately. I have tried it wih nero 5.5.x and XP builtin app (crippled ecdc). :( I thought DVD drive was on the way out, it had an issue reading a CD earlier. Removing DVD from channel and making CDRW master I could burn one CD succesfully and then the same problems cropped up. Next connected DVD back as slave, tried older nero ASPI dll with no change, then renamed nero ASPI dll and installed Adaptec ASPI layer and updated ASPI to 2.71. Again could burn one CD and then no more even after multiple reboots, but this time it would throw up a SCSI command failure error. Checked device manager and realised all my IDE drives were being shown as SCSI devices. :) Went to nvidia IDE controler and rolled back the driver from xxxxx.307 or was it .703 to .0 then shutdown, moved HD off the nforce2 IDE controler and onto the GigaRAID controler, restrted and now CDRW and DVD are detected as IDE drives and two IDE channels are shown in device manager. Burning CDs now works with nero again. The strange thing is, I assumed that if the drives were being detected as SCSI drives then an ASPI layer was not required because it was built in to the SCSI drivers but nero would not work without it. :? Oh well.

< Major IDE unstable problem from my NV17 nForce 2 IGP + MCP >

My reliable WD Caviar Hard Disk "randomly" shutting down (idle at no power then re-alive after a second) mostly when the IDE utilized at full speed or running several applications at the same time, but couldn't figure out what exactly how to reproduce or under control to find out the errors ... ... ... :{

System info: AXP2500 (BOX) original Heatsink & FAN + Chaintech 7NIF2 Motherboard + WD300AB at IDE 0 single mode and plug out all the slave devices and swap the channels and changed all cables for triple test & confirm + nforce2 v2.03 Unified Drivers + native Windows XP Pro Build 2600 (without updating to any service pack 1, 2 ... and more)

- there's no overclock and all Default Settings in the latest BIOS (Fully 333Mhz FSB with single channel 256MB Kingston 2700DDR RAM)

~ Any suggestions are all welcome !!! ~

Hello karetsos!

Thanks to remind me about to install the S.P. before the Unifed Driver (include IDE) takes place. But I already did so for updating to the current sp1 and sp2 then re-install 2.03; and I still got the same trouble! (H.D. Clicking Sound ramdomly)

Well, the only way is clean the O/S and install back the native XP for try (min. conflict with the other device-drivers and S.P. upgrades). Then I got the "poorForce" result listed at the previous 1st posted in above :{

Now I'm asking guys to help me to find any early version than 2.03 with IDE drivers for lucky try  any experts can help are all welcome too!

PS: May be the only word from now is "be-waited" from Nvidia. And I hope that is the only complain of my nForce2 plateform.

~ Regards to all folks ~

This looks strange (sudden HDD spin off). People with different HDDs, drivers and nf2 mainboards experience this. I suspect this is something bad with WinXP + nforce2 combo. In Win98 I don't get this error, but in WinXP quite often in cases poorforce explained.
