Ok, I have an Asus Crosshair board (socket AM2) running a 4800 X2 windsor core right now. This cpu is going into my son's computer in the next couple of weeks, So I'm looking to upgrade. So far, The only logical idea I have come up with is to go with the an FX-62 OR the new 6000 X2. I like the idea of a true 3ghz, BUT, I've heard the 6000 X2 does not overclock well and that it runs very hot (windsor cores! grrr). But is it worth it to spend another $60 USD and go for the 2.8ghz FX-62 ?

Well a quick check at newegg reveals the 6000 is now 169.00 Shocked ..

So with a 100.00 diff in price..I have but one question Fox...

What makes the FX better? Since they are both Windsor cores.

Forgive my ignorance...New tech is rolling out so fast these days I just can't keep up anymore! Embarassed

Ahhh, I see. Yes, I remember the whole unlocked multiplier deal when I got my first 3200 T-bred core. I was so frustrated it wouldn't over clock at all till I was told the 3200 Barton was the one with unlocked multi's. Sometimes io guess it was just luck of the draw.

So FX it is then. Since I know I'll wanna OC it no matter what! Guess I'll just have to save a few more pennies then.

So are the rules still the same? Burn it in under load at stock speeds and then oc? Or have things changed?

Thanks guys. Always great info.

You can get the Black Edition of the 6400 for less than/the same as the retail 6000, IIRC.

This is probably the best amd X2 cpu there is right now.It will oc to 3.4 ghz with a very small voltage increase.3.0ghz with no increase. And it uses the smaller 65nm cores so heat is not a problem. This was done on a stock cooler..$98.30 at clubIt with free fedex shipping.MAKE SURE YOU GET THE ONE WITH THE NEW G2 STEPPING... http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/10/22/budget_overclocker/

Wow, I forgot about this post.

Thanks for the info on the 5000. I may get one just to see what it can do on water. My water cooling set up holds nearly 1 US gallon of Fluid XP Laughing .

Cool that I found this post because I just ordered one. I was looking at the new X2 cores and I would rather have one that sucks up less power meaning less heat. Sweet.
