PostPosted: Sat Dec 01, 2007 8:28 am    Post subject: [Solved] A7N8X Deluxe v2 - SATA II Issues!

Today I upgraded my file server, everything works perfectly until I plugged up the SATA hard drives using the onboard Sil controller. When I boot up the PC it just freezes at the Sil bios screen where it displays the HDD's connected, which shows only one hard drive out of two and says I can press F4 to do raid settings. However, even if I wait a few minutes or press F4/Ctrl+S it just stays there frozen. But if I hit ctrl + alt + del it reboots. So then I tried flashing to the latest 1008 bios but same damn thing. Any other suggestions?

Specs:
Asus A7N8X Deluxe v2 (1008 offical bios)
Athlon XP 2500+ Barton
Corsair 256mb PC3200 LL
WD 10GB IDE (OS boot drive)
2x WD 750GB SATA (Using onboard SATA... non raided)

I have many more drives but those are all IDE and disconnected for now until I can get the board to work with the SATA drives. I'm not even trying to use RAID. This thing is blowing my mind. I have also disabled many things in bios that I won't need like onboard audio, firewire, printer port, gaming port, floppy etc.

is the jumpers on the hard drive properly set?

I had a problem with a WD IDE drive once where I had to set it to master instead of auto to get it to boot

Jumper on IDE is single mode. Don't think the SATA drives even have jumper settings.

try messing with the jumper on the IDE drive or detaching the IDE drive completely

I now have all drives including the boot drive disconnected except for ONE WD SATA 750GB HDD. It still just freezes after displaying the attached drive on the Sil bios screen. I cannot hit F4 or Ctrl + S.

I tried reflashing to 1008 and resetting the cmos the proper way. Still no luck. Everything works flawless with this machine until I tried to get the SATA to work.

I've also tried messing around with the SATA jumpers but no go. Whole reason for this upgrade was to get SATA supported on the file server. :c( As a last resort I'm going to try bios 1008 w/ the latest SATA bios using the cbrom method.

Any other suggestions folks? Sadly I don't have any other SATA HDD's to test this with. Not sure if the SATA bios does not support 750GB+ drives or if it's just picky with WD drives. I've spent about 6 hours reading thru old posts but still no luck.

When running 1 Western Digital IDE drive you need to have no jumpers at all on it. When you set the jumper to master it will be looking for a slave. Are the sata drives sata-2? If so you'll need to put a jumper on them to set them to Sata-150. Otherwise as you said maybe the board doesn't support drives that big.

Yes, the HDD is SATA 2. Had no idea you could change WD SATA drives to SATA 1 via jumper. Let me check WD's site to see how to do it... thanks!

Edit: I tried jumper via http://support.wdc.com/images/kb/sataopt1on.gif ... once again only the WD 750GB SATA HDD was connected to the onboard. Just wanted to see if it get's passed the Sil bios screen. But still gets stuck. Going to try updating bios slipstreamed with latest SATA bios and pray if that works.

Thanks so much for the feedback so far guys... now I remember why I sold this board when I had it many years ago before but I think I had rev 1.06.
