Serious issue with 2.41 drivers on A7N8X...am I alone?

Postby Osm3um » Wed May 21, 2003 3:26 pm

My system is as follows:

WIN XP SP1 on
Asus A7N8X deluxe
Mylex 170lp, i960 based scsi raid controller
2 Quantum atlas II 18gb striped as one
1 36GB SCSI HD
1 30GB ide HD
1 ide CD
Nvidid mx400 (I think) based video

When I installed teh 2.41 drivers it brought my system to its knees. Would not boot, simply sat on the Windows XP screen forever....and never got to the login screen.

So, I grumbled and b****, rebuilt Windows XP on the same partition (of course it deletes the entire winnt directory), applied SP1, applied the 2.41 drivers and same problem.....

Obviously 2.41 does not like my system!

Thanks,
Bob

Check the Drivers forum, quite a bit of people are saying the same thing.

You rebuilt windows for that ? --> WHY ?

At the very least you should have run CHKDSK on the partition.
In future you should keep in mind that you can repair the existing OS.
To do this, boot to the XP CDROM then on the options menu choose choose Install Windows on this PC, not the Repair option at that point.
Setup will then scan the drive and find your existing install and ask you if you would like to Repair. Say yes this time.
The second repair option will keep your existing profiles etc .. the first one wont.

Install the 2.41 drivers manually, one at a time until you find the offender. A friend of mine had the same problem on an ABit NF7 and it turned out to be the GART driver...strange but true.

Just installed the 2.41s on mine, including the IDE driver, and it all works flawlessly - no problems whatsosver.

The new IDE driver is *very* nice - CPU usage when burning a CD at 52X, is now sod-all 8) 8)

I never install the nForce 2 ide drivers, because I like seeing that UDMA 6 setting in my IDE properties for my Diamondmax 9 Plus. Does anyone here think the nForce 2 ide drivers offer better performance over the stock manufacturer drivers? thx

So I am not alone....

Postby Osm3um » Thu May 22, 2003 12:23 am

BTW, windows was so screwed up after the drivers I HAD to rebuild it.....I am not a neophyte but a network admin who builds PCs for a living and I am tellign you XP was MESSED UP! (Not to mention that I was getting a must activate in 3 days note from MS because my hardware had supposedly changed.....although it hadn't).

I read something about 2.41 made the IDE drives show up as scsi or something so I am wonderng if it somehow is related to my SCSI raid.

All I know is I will be rebuilding tonight and will try it without the SW IDE drivers....
